Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
