Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
